Kratom 101: What It’s Made Of and How to Make It Delicious

If you’ve ever heard of kratom but weren’t quite sure what it was, you’re not alone! Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, primarily found in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. Its leaves have been used for centuries for their unique properties, ranging from stimulating energy to promoting relaxation, depending on the strain and dosage.

What’s in Kratom?

Kratom’s effects come from its active compounds called alkaloids, the most notable being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These alkaloids interact with receptors in the brain, producing a range of effects that can feel uplifting, calming, or somewhere in between. Different strains (like White, Green, and Red vein varieties) have distinct profiles, so it’s worth exploring which one works best for your needs.

Making Kratom Taste Amazing

The biggest hurdle for many kratom drinkers? The taste! Kratom has an earthy, bitter flavor that can be challenging to stomach, especially if taken as a straight powder in water. But don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to make kratom into a delicious beverage.

1. Kratom Citrus Cooler

Why it works: The acidity from citrus fruits helps mask the bitterness and may even enhance alkaloid absorption.

  • 2-4 grams of kratom powder
  • 1 cup of orange juice (or a mix of orange, lemon, and lime)
  • 1 teaspoon of honey or agave syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • Blend or shake well and enjoy!

2. Kratom Iced Tea

Why it works: Tea is a classic preparation method that allows you to steep the kratom, reducing its bitterness.

  • 2-4 grams of kratom powder
  • 2 cups of hot water
  • 1 tea bag (chamomile, green, or black tea work great)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or sweetener
  • Lemon slices for garnish
  • Let steep, strain, chill, and serve over ice.

3. Kratom Chocolate Milkshake

Why it works: Chocolate naturally masks bitterness and provides a creamy, indulgent experience.

  • 1 cup of milk or almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
